The 5 Coolest Applications of 3d Printing So Far

3d Printing has taken the world by storm, and recently we’ve seen some very cool new innovations emerge out of the fledgling industry. While building small plastic replacement parts or sculptures was the most obvious application of this new medium, it was inevitable that more creative people would test the limits of their new printers to bring us new ideas that might revolutionize entire industries (or in other cases, just taste good or look awesome, either way they are here to stay).

Creative Commons - Attribution Photo by John AbellaChocolate Printing

Whoever first thought to use chocolate as a printing medium rather than the usual resins is a true genius. While we’ve been molding chocolate into bunnies, Santa Clauses, and various delicious textures for centuries we’ve finally reached the age where you can create a truly grand and intricate work of art that you can eat when you get bored of it.

Printed Clothing

While 3d printed shoes have been around since people started making sculptures (so the beginning basically), they’ve gotten increasingly wearable and led to much more complex constructions, such as linked cloth-like materials printed out to form other dresses, bags, and jewelry.

Phone Glove

A phone that comes in the form of  a glove probably won’t catch on as a mass-market product for the average consumers. We simply don’t need to have a phone permanently strapped to our hands when we can just as easily use a Bluetooth device and keep our hands free that way. That being said, the fact that it was made using a 3d printer is very interesting. Someone building one of these under their own expertise and power is a great example of how 3d printing is breaking down barriers to innovation by private individuals and small businesses. The phone glove might not be that exciting on its own, but it’s paving the way for the decentralization of electronics.

Prosthetic Limbs

Out of everything that I found when digging around in the 3d printing world, this was the one that I found most exciting. Prosthetic limbs are usually very expensive, and developing a printable model that’s naturally fully customizable in terms of scale in pre-production eliminates a lot of middle men, and will make it much cheaper to both produce them and to develop new and better designs, since users of those limbs could theoretically contribute directly by modifying the 3d model design of their own prosthetics for future replacements.

Metal Printing

3d Printing is billed as a revolutionary innovation for a variety of reasons, and possibly the best reason is metal printing. The biggest problem with 3d printing up to this point was that plastics are a finite resource that’s already under a lot of stress due to our heavy global crude oil consumption. Metal printing is changing all of that. Selective laser sintering has existed for decades, but its full potential was never realized because of the lack of supporting technology at the time. Now it’s being used to push the limits of 3d printing to the next level.

How a business can make the most of its marketing strategies

Despite the current economic climate, small businesses and medium-sized enterprises can still succeed. Businesses can rise above the competition where there’s demand for a product or service with the help of an intelligent marketing strategy.

Some businesses today admit to limited marketing budgets holding them back from reaching their customer base, with news of newly launched or upcoming products falling flat without being picked up on by the public.

Implementing a marketing strategy may well be the most important thing a business can do – and it doesn’t have to cost the world. Of course, it’s well within a company’s interests to reduce its marketing spends while putting into place the most beneficial plans, and there are a number of cost-effective routes open to a 21st century business.

The importance of having a strong website

The internet undoubtedly plays a huge role in the modern world. Personal computers and, in more recent years, laptops and tablet computers have slowly edged the television set from its decades-long reign as the home’s focal point. With a huge number of U.S citizens today making daily use of the internet, increasingly via tablets and smartphones, having a great website couldn’t be more important. This has to involve strong aesthetics so a business comes across as professional and trustworthy, and also functionality so that users feel engaged and find a site easy to navigate.

Being visible on the internet is essential. With more and more people choosing to shop online, it’s important for a business to increase its visibility. The best methods include using a mixture of search engine optimization (SEO) to achieve better rankings in the results of popular search engine sites, such as Google and Yahoo, and activity on social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and Google+.

A return to tradition

Of course, it’s not all about technology. The world’s population may be increasingly tech savvy, but printed marketing materials have been around for centuries, and there’s one simple reason – they work.

Especially for smaller businesses targeting residential or business areas in their locality, or looking to attract the custom of shoppers passing through nearby retail centers and shopping districts, printed marketing material allows businesses to reach customers in a variety of ways.

Printed banners hung on poles will grab the attention of passers-by simply by the space they take up. Likewise, flyers can be posted out to residents in specific zip codes or handed out to shoppers on the street. Glossy brochures can be left in suitable venues, such as serviced office centers for B2B enterprises, or local hotels and information centers for businesses seeking to attract custom from tourists.

The business card – a timeless classic

Anyone who’s attended a weekend conference or regularly sits in on business meetings will testify to the importance of a good business card. Handing over a business card to a potential client or business partner can be a great way of showing them real interest, professionalism, and trustworthiness.

Tried and tested – email marketing

Email campaigns have proven useful to businesses in every sector – from office cleaners to grocery stores and recreation centers. Business owners should build an email list gradually by requesting customer email addresses with purchases made in store and online. Some people might be naturally reluctant to subscribe – which is why it pays to offer special deals, discounts, and engaging newsletters for those who do.

Be heard

Ultimately, it all comes down to selling the brand; being active and promoting a company’s name, colors, and mission statement whenever possible. It’s about giving the business a face and a voice, making other businesses and the public know what is on offer – and that as a name in the industry or market, the company is here to stay.

Tips to Get Some Great Pictures on Events

Having been a part of some events as a photographer, I have come to understand that photography is more about catching the perfect moment rather than trying to make one. The beauty of the picture comes with the honesty and subtlety of the emotions that are being captured. Adding some simple touches to your work can make a world of difference to the results.

Introduce Yourself

At any event, a photographer is one of the people who will get in touch with just about everyone. Take a minute of the guest’s time and introduce yourself. Do make a polite request of photographing them so that once you take a picture, they do not express their displeasure on an unwanted picture being captured. Also ask them if they are interested in large size with relatively cheap canvas prints later on. Some might be interested in getting larger sizes of their snaps.

Study Your Audience

The people you will be photographing are your audience and like any artist, closely study them. Have a close look at their emotions of joy, pleasure, concern and care. Feel the energy and connect with them understanding their feelings.

Photograph with a Purpose

As you become more and more familiar with the event and the people, you will automatically be able to locate chances of capturing some great stills. As you have already sought permission, you can take some pictures without intimating the person who is being photographed. This often helps you bring out the very best of pictures. Many people are not comfortable with being photographed and act unnaturally in front of the camera. Catching them unaware can help you in taking some of their most memorable pictures. Also take the pictures considering that these may have to be printed on photo paper. If the pictures were to be printed on a larger size, for example, using canvas printing, will they look good?

Take Your Time

There are no prizes for clicking fast; it will only help you filling your memory cards with pictures that are not of good quality. Take your time if you want to get the best pictures. Make sure that the lens has been properly adjusted and lighting for the picture is adequate and you will not under or over expose the snap.

Take Multiple Photos

Make sure that you take at least two of a kind. Sometimes the best in the business are unable to deliver in a single snap shot or on occasions, a second shot is even better. Either way, having a back shot, if not two, is something you must do.

Get Closer

Although modern cameras allow you to zoom in from long distances, it is ideal that you get closer while you take a picture. The results in general get better and you are able to get sharper images. It also allows you to focus more on the person or persons you are looking to photograph and the distractions such as people moving around are least. A clearer picture will help in getting great results if one wants to have prints on canvas for these pictures.

Be Prepared

A great opportunity can arrive at any point. Never be in a slumber when you are working and be sure to have your mind ready for such an opportunity. As soon as one provides itself to you, pounce on it.

Be Yourself

Do not try to imitate other’s style of photography. Everyone has his or her own instinct and you must follow it. Know what suits you more and follow the style that you feel confident with. The rest will fall in place by itself.

Mugs - CC Attribution photo by Andrea_44 on Flickr

Adapting Art to Other Mediums

Selling artwork in its original form without being forced to adapt it for other mediums or other formats hasn’t been a reality for decades. Because of this a great artist or graphic artist is often defined not only by the quality of their original work, but how well they can adapt that work to other formats and mediums in order to make it marketable. For the purpose of this article we’ll go over some of the easiest ways to get your work out of your studio and into the hands of the public.

If you’ve done a painting the original could be worth anything from a couple bucks to hundreds or thousands of dollars, but the prints will be worth a fraction of that, maybe 20% on a good day. An extremely easy way to increase the value of your print is to attach it to evenly spray gloss on it, the same way that you sealed your original painting. This time you’re not sealing anything, but you’re changing the surface of the paper to make it look more like the original, and not an obvious copy. Additionally framing the piece appropriately will increase its value significantly more than the cost of the frame, which you may need to do anyway if your painting has dimensions that frames aren’t usually mass-produced in.

Mugs are an easy and relatively inexpensive way to get your art out in front of other people. The problem is that most of the time the image on your mug doesn’t come close to the quality of your actual piece. Enter dye sublimation printing. There are a variety of configurations you can use but it will require specialized inks, transfer paper, and specially treated mugs. After you print out your image you’ll clamp it tightly onto the mug and bake it to evaporate the ink onto the mug. The biggest advantage of using dye-sublimation is that you won’t be limited to the relatively large “pixels” that result from more traditional mug-printing practices, and the image will never wear or peel off.  Additionally you won’t have to worry about the number or types of colors that you’re using, since you’ll be printing your image onto the transfer paper before you have to worry about applying it to the mug. At the end of the day the cost-per-mug is about the same as any other method, but the quality is significantly higher, allowing you much greater freedom in the types of images that you can use.

File Formatting and Apparel

For apparel it’s vital that your piece is properly formatted. While you can get away with a high quality raster file to when copying a print or printing something onto a mug, you’ll often be thwarted by your file format when you move into logo and t-shirt designs. The reason this is important is because you’ll often need to scale your image to a size that’s significantly larger than the image that you’ve got. Increasing the size of an image isn’t as simple as it looks in the movies; bigger pictures need more pixels, and more data. If you take your standard .jpg and make it bigger, you’ll just end up with a fuzzy pixelated blob.

That’s why you’ll need a vector file, which doesn’t save any pixels or any other actual visual input from your image, but rather saves a bunch of math describing to your computer how to build the image on a graph. That means your computer can just calculate out any size that you’d like. Always put together a vector version of your file in order to allow you adjust the size at will. Note that saving your file as a .eps (or other vector file) doesn’t actually make it a vector file. You’ll need to manually trace out the entire image on your computer to “teach” it how to build the image. It takes a while to make a vector version, but it’s well worth the effort, and can save you a massive headache later on.

Five Unique Mediums You Should Try Printing On

Although Internet advertising has exploded, many businesses find that good old-fashioned mediums like printing still play a very important role in their advertising plans. While your customers will expect to get printed items such as business cards or brochures from you, you can do something unexpected by having these and other items printed on unusual materials to make yourself stand out more. Here are a few ideas for five unusual mediums you can print on to promote your business.

Plastic Business Cards

It’s a Catch-22, really. You know that you need to carry business cards to hand out to your clients and to compete in today’s business world. However, your competitors realize this, too. So how do you make your card stand out in your potential client’s wallet–by plastic printing, that’s how.

Plastic business cards give you the option of the sturdiness of plastic so your card won’t get beat up once it goes into your client’s wallet and with options like transparent card printing, you can add an element to your design that your competitors’ cardboard business cards won’t have.

Wood as a medium for printing has been around for thousands of years. Many of the surviving pieces of art from centuries past were painted on wood. You can give your promo pieces that same sort of timeless appeal. If you’re not sure how to do it, think menus for a restaurant or name cards at a catering event printed on thin wood for an extra classy and memorable touch.

In the digital age, pictures are ubiquitous. If you’re printing marketing materials like calendars or inspirational posters to send out as promo items to your clients, think about having these items printed on canvas. If you add a wooden dowel to the top of your items printed on canvas, they will become pieces of wall art reminiscent of the tapestries found decorating the walls of ancient buildings. A promo calendar designed on this medium will wind up hung up on your client’s wall where he can see it and your business name all year.

What is a kitchen without refrigerator magnets on the fridge? Without them, most people would have no place to hang notes to their families or their kids’ artwork. Use this to your advantage by having your advertising materials printed on magnets. Your potential customers will see your name every time they open the fridge.

Kid Tattoos

If your company regularly hosts community events, and you want to create a free giveaway that’s sure to draw families to your booth, think about having something printed on temporary tattoos. Make these items something that the kids will love and the parents will remember by having a cute graphic printed on the tattoo and then your business’ logo printed on the paper backing of the temporary tattoo. At your next community events, the kids will remember the tattoo and their parents will remember you.

Creating more sustainable packaging systems

In a previous article I have suggested some ideas to consider for improving your package design in general. In this one I would like to introduce you to the complex world of sustainability as far as package design is concerned and suggest some ways to make your packaging more sustainable.

Did you know that our present methods of production, consumption and disposal are actually destroying globally our life support system?

Well you don’t have to take my word on it, you can always spend some time researching and contemplating on that.
If you design packaging or want to learn more about package design, you should be aware by now that packaging is not about the structural graphics only, but also of form and materials. You should fully be aware and understand that your choices of materials and material applications have impact and consequences to our natural habitat.

You might be thinking that packaging requires the coordination of numerous industries, but rather than worry and be alarmed by this complexity you should be happy because as the designer you have many ways to reduce the negative impacts of packaging in the environment. As a package designer you are the one who should be knowledgeable and advice your client about these matters.

Sustainability requires us to understand this world as the complex system it is, and interact accordingly.
Here are some things to consider:

Try to use higher percentages of post-consumer recycled content. This encourages the the efficiency and development of collection systems by creating more demand, and is already is significantly reducing energy consumption and deforestation.
Explore the tree-free alternatives such as fast growing plants and agricultural by-products. Plants like hemp, switch grass, kenaf and straw, grow quickly, they need less water and fewer chemicals. Also from a marketing standpoint they provide more innovative opportunities to create unique and more interesting lines of “paper”.

Use papers from certified pulp sources this ensures that everyone in the supply chain gets fair share of the profits. FSC provides this kind of certifications for any wood derived materials. They monitor the sustainability of timber growth and harvest, as well as indigenous peoples and workers rights.

Use less ink coverage. The more ink consumed in the process the more will be the post-industrial and post-consumer waste to recycle the package.

Approximately 20% of the Pantone colors contain especially harmful chemicals. For example metallic colors contain high levels of copper and zinc compounds while many reds contain barium. Fluorescent colors also have a high toxic load.
Investigate and request soy based, or other vegetable produced inks. Soy printing in terms of performance has a higher level of rub resistance thus resulting in less dot gain than petroleum based inks. Soy pigments are much more intense requiring less ink to achieve the same effect. They are more easily removed from paper making the De-inking part of the recycle process more efficient. Soy ink can be cleaned with water based solvents reducing further the VOC (volatile organic compounds) that cause air pollution. Last but not least soy waste is considered much less hazardous by government standards.

Finally design packages with recycling in mind. Plastics used in the package should be easily detached from it and also marked with the proper resin symbol. We’ll further discuss this in a future article!

That’s definitely not all, but will help you get started!

Hope you enjoyed the article! I am looking forward for your comments and opinions.

What is Digital Printing and its Benefits?

The world of technology keeps evolving every day. With it, traditional printing methods have been gradually replaced by digital printers. Laser printers and inkjet printers are becoming more and more popular in today’s world, but what gives them the edge over traditional printing methods?

What is Digital Printing?

Digital printing is a method of printing in which a digital image file is sent directly to the printer and is recreated on a piece of paper. The most common types of digital printing devices are laser and inkjet printers.

Laser printers employ the use of lasers in order to create an image on the paper. Toner is used instead of ink to attach to the surface of the paper to create text and images.

Inkjet printers are the most commonly used printers. They still require the use of ink, but they use it in a different manner than traditional printers. Inkjet printers blot dots of ink on the paper. The dots are arranged on the paper by use of a set of magnetized plates that shift and change to create the desired shapes for the picture or text.

The Difference between Digital Printing and Traditional Printing

There are many differences between digital and traditional printing methods, but the key difference lies in how they obtain their information and print it on the paper. Digital printers work by taking digital files from the computer and transferring the image or text directly on the paper. Many traditional printers work by taking information from a file and transferring the correct sequence of ink to metal plates within the printer. The image created by the plates is then imprinted on a rubber sheet. The rubber sheet is then used to print the image or text on the paper.

The Benefits of Digital Printing

Digital printing is less expensive than traditional printing methods. If you take everything by face value, this doesn’t seem true. Traditional printers are usually less expensive than laser printers or inkjet printers. However, they’re much cheaper to maintain. The main reason for this is ink. Ink is incredibly expensive, and replacing ink cartridges repeatedly can really add up. Laser printers don’t require ink to print. They only require toner, which is cheaper than ink. Toner never dries up or clumps like ink, and laser printers don’t require replacement of cartridges as often as traditional printers. Inkjet printers still require ink, but they don’t use nearly as much as traditional printers.

Not only is digital printing cheaper, but it’s also very eco-friendly. Traditional printing usually results in a lot of wasted paper and tossed out ink cartridges. Since digital printing is so precise and requires little in terms of resources like toner and ink, there is much less waste involved.

Digital printing is also usually faster than traditional printing. Digital printing takes a digital image and puts it directly on the paper. Traditional printers have to go through several steps in order to transfer the image from the file to the paper.

The image quality is also significantly better with digital printers. Digital printing provides a vast array of colors to provide great image quality for artwork or photographs. Many traditional printers only have a limited amount of colors to work with. If you took a colorful piece of art and printed it from a digital printer and a traditional printer, you would most likely be able to point out key differences in color and picture quality.

Digital printing can provide you with a quick and easy way to print quality copies of your files. Not only will you save money, but you’ll also save time and resources.

Affordable way of using green printing for non-profit business

Are you hesitant to go for ‘green printing’ because it will be expensive for your non-profit organization? If yes, you should read this blog. Here we will discuss how you can cut down on your expense with green printing practices. Take a look.

The danger of global warming has changed the way in which people do businesses. Be it the governmental bodies, non-profit organizations to multinational corporations, all of them are adopting the fashion of ‘going green’.

Recycling paper and print cartridges, reducing energy usage and buying from local vendors – are common eco-friendly practices non-profit organizations follow. However, still many non-profit organizations are hesitant to choose green printing. They fear that printing costs will shoot up if they opt for natural printing methods.

Associating green printing with high cost is no less than a misconception. Understand that green printing is not expensive. Rather it helps you save your costs. All you need is little panning with right selection of printers – and your business printing will become easy and economical.

So the question arises – how do you go about it?

1. Search for printers in your neighborhood. Make sure that the printer you choose follows eco-friendly printing. Use these web sources to make your search process easier:

2. Once you select a green printer, proceed to the next step – communication between the designer and the printer.

Note: two factors that affect green printing are:

  • Design
  • Paper quality

Often designers prepare design without knowledge of eco-friendly printing. Be careful of this mistake. Note: there are specific parameters that a designer needs to follow in eco-friendly printing.

Thus, make sure that the designer and printer communicates with each other in the initial stage. This will prevent any chances of mistake.

3. Understand that every printed page involves several chemicals. You can avoid these through eco-friendly choices. For example, use paper and ink that involves less or zero use of chemicals.

4. Make sure that you clearly mention the term ‘eco-friendly’ on all your printed materials – this will show your commitment towards the environment as a responsible NGO.

5. Paper quality: choose environmentally friendly paper with zero chlorine content. These papers will have post-consumer fiber.

Note: Green-printing remains incomplete if environmentally friendly paper is not used. Thus, make sure that your printer uses eco-friendly paper.

6. Use green ink: Consult with your printer regarding the use of recycled inks or low-polluting ink. Consider the VOC value of every ink type.

**VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compound

Prefer vegetable-based ink to petroleum-based ink. Vegetable-based ink contains less VOC.

In the Vegetable Ink Printing Act (1993), Co-op America has stated vegetable levels in different inks:

  • Sheet-fed inks: 20%
  • Heat-set inks: 10%
  • News inks: 40%
  • Forms inks: 20%

7. Use of paper: Follow these:

  • Paper is produced in standard sheet sizes. Try to make maximum number of paper copies out of every sheet.
  • Do not print your publications in non-standard paper sizes.

8. Try to convert your promotional materials in self-mailer. In a self-mailer, you will not need a separate envelope.

9. Try to include the cover letter in the printed material itself.

If a cover letter is necessary, try to use both sides of paper. Reduce the number of pages to minimum.

10. Do not use bindings, foils and adhesives to package your printed documents. They make the paper unrecyclable.

11. Choose a Eco Friendly Printing company

  • Uses waterless printing system – here there is no water wastage
  • Uses renewable energy sources

12. Do not use foil stamps, coatings and varnishes on paper. This will make the paper unrecyclable.

13. Go for online promotion. There can be no better alternative to save the environment.

Business Cards

How to make your business card stand out

If you’re setting up your own business, or simply want to drum up more interest during the difficult economic climate, you’ll already know the power of an effective marketing campaign. But sometimes, nothing beats good old self promotion – and by that I mean getting out there, distributing your business card and making yourself known to potential clients and partners.

The problem is, you won’t be the only person with this idea and if you hand your business card out, chances are the recipient probably has a stack of very similar-looking rectangles of card sitting on their desk. It’s all too easy for people to throw them away, so you need to make sure your business card catches their attention and makes them think: “Hang on a second, this person actually might have something to offer.”

So, where so you start? Well, aside from the obvious information, like your name, job title and contact details, you should consider putting a picture of yourself on your business card. Think about it, if you’re meeting lots of new people every day and all of them give you their business card, you’re going to forget who is who. Maybe you’ll sit at your desk and think: “Oh yes, Brian Smith was the guy with a shaved head, he seemed pretty nice, but who was Mark Robinson? And was Chris Smart the guy with glasses?”

If you have a photograph on your business card the recipient will instantly know who you are when they pick it up and connect your name with your face, meaning they are more likely to think of you when they require a particular service.

The next thing to think of is colours. Most business cards are white with printed lettering. So, imagine you are looking at a desk full of business cards – what would jump out at you? A business card that isn’t white. Consider going for a coloured background that will really make an impact. Red and black are particularly strong colours. However, it is important to ensure the text also stands out and is very readable against such a bold background.

Once you’ve decided on a colour scheme, the next thing to consider are the final details and all the creative extras you can add to your business card to really make it stand out from the crowd and ensure it’s unforgettable. Here’s a list of some things to consider:

  1. Size and shape – Don’t go for a standard rectangle, try something else
  2. Cartoons – Get a custom cartoon commissioned for the back of the card
  3. 3D – Some business cards can be printed so they stand up, fold over and have pop out sections
  4. Die cutting – Specify shapes to be cut into the side of your card, like a bite mark if you’re a caterer
  5. Recipes – Include a recipe if you work in the food industry
  6. Material – Cardboard is boring, try something else
  7. Quotes – Add a famous and relevant quotation on the back
  8. Double-sided – Take advantage of the fact you have two sides of cards and use them both
  9. Stickers – Print one side of your business card on self-adhesive paper
  10. Trading cards – If you run a firm with a few people get trading card-style business cards printed for each member of the team and encourage people to collect them

All of these ideas ensure your business card will offer something a bit different to the rest of the pack and mean it will stick in the recipient’s mind. It’s all about getting yourself noticed and an interesting business card will do just that.

Turning your images into art

With digital photography opening up a creative sphere once limited to those with the specialist equipment and know-how, nowadays almost anybody can become an artist. Even the most basic digital cameras currently available are rarely less than 10 megapixels and take photos to such a high resolution that they can provide a clear image when reproduced on a 16 x 20 inch print. Those willing to invest a little more in their photography apparatus can buy cameras which allow them to print perfect images onto epic 50 x 70 inch canvas backdrops.

An increasingly popular medium for photographic prints, canvas is now widely used for producing quality and authentic looking artwork. By printing photos to canvas, anybody can create the timeless effect of an oil painting without any of the mess and in a much shorter time. Digital photography allows us to remove blemishes and red eye prior to printing and those who are familiar with photo enhancement software can improve the quality and upscale the image to a larger print format with none of the pixelation usually associated with enlargement. Special effects are easy to apply, including colour enhancing or a transformation to monochrome, sepia or the poster/ pop art effect which is back in fashion. The canvas itself then provides a distinctive texture which draws the eye and gives the photo a unique depth.

Canvas photo prints have several other advantages over standard paper prints. Firstly, the quality of the image is sustained for much longer (current predictions at a hundred years) since it does not fade and is not susceptible to smears created by oily fingers. Secondly, large scale prints can be put on canvas and make a thoroughly effective wall hanging for spacious rooms and offices. There is also the added option to reproduce a mounted photograph without a frame by stretching canvas over a wooden structure. This looks modern and is ideal for landscape shots where the edge of the scene is indefinite.

People may try and debate whether or not photographs printed onto canvas can really count as art, but surely there is no question that an image intentionally created in an original form and used for visual effect and appreciation is just that, art.
