If you are doing shoots and taking photographs for professional products for websites and product catalogues, then you are always striving for that perfect shot. The main task of taking professional product photos is to make them stand out visually and display the product and its features. If you are new to product photography then it is imperative that you get the images right and that it appeals to the target audience. Let us look at five simple ways where you can make your photo shoot a real product photography catalogue.

1. Camera equipment

Ensure that you camera equipment is up to the job. Many digital cameras are designed to focus more on larger objects, ensure you get the best camera for your money. Do not believe either that it is all about the amount of Megapixels; it is also based on how good the actual lens is and its range for the shot. Also it is a really good idea to have a tripod setup for your camera as it gives the shot much more stability and prevents any blur in the shot.

2. Light

This can be a difficult one to master for many. When you are doing a professional photography shoot you will often find that the shoot is being done inside rather than out in the open. If done inside then you do not really want to use the flash as this can cause issues with the final shot. To get round this make sure that there is plenty of light for the shot whether this is in the form of lighting that you setup via spotlights or other forms of lighting.

3. Editing the shot

It is very important to enhance the images once they have been taken, this can be for many reasons including centering the image as this is very important for professional product photography shoots as the image always needs to be in the centre. You can also sharpen the image and enrich the colours which are what you want especially if the image will be in a catalogue or website.

4. Take lots of shots

This may seem obvious to many, but the more images that you take then the easier it is for you in the long run. The problem is if you just rely on one shot then you can be left in the position where you may have to edit it further, whereby if you had taken twenty shots of the same product you may have one that requires minimum editing.

5. Background

Background is an important area to be aware of, this can vary greatly depending on what product photography you are doing. It is a good idea though to steer clear from a busy background with lots going on as this can often draw attention away from the product that you are trying to promote. Consider using white backgrounds for products where the product sits in the centre of the photo. Turn your camera onto aperture mode as this will give the photo a great amount of depth and make the product stand out, you can also tidy the image up further with image editing software.
