As January gets well underway, now is the perfect time to liven up your living space. But in 2013, there are a number of great interior design trends that will completely transform your home. Here, are 10 of the hottest:

1. Handmade touches

If you’re looking to transform your home on a budget this year, the handmade trend is the one for you. Get crafty and make your own pillow cases and throws, wall canvases and more. If you’re not exactly a talented artist, second-hand and thrifted goods work just as well. This trend is all about making your home personal, and really cosy.

2. Perfect primary

Bold colours are big news for 2013, and when we say bold we mean reds, yellows, and blues. The primary colours are no longer just for children’s bedrooms – they should be used everywhere. If you’re not brave enough to use one on a statement wall, why not colour block with clashing pillows? This fresh, young statement is perfect for modern households.

3. Au natural

No longer confined to the bathroom, natural materials are spilling out all around the home. Raffia, soft woven baskets, oak furnishings, soft throws are all perfect ways to add a little touch of this trend. It is simple, subtle, and will look perfect in any room. Remember, less is definitely more with this trend.

4. Precious metals

Love them or loathe them, copper and brass furnishings are back with a bang this year. However, something as subtle as a lamp, picture frame, or table decoration in these tones will work well. Again, this is one interior design trend that needs to be kept minimal to make maximum impact.

5. Opulent luxury

We all dream of living in a huge manor house, with opulent furniture and OTT features. One of the hottest interior design trends for 2013 is velvet, and luxury. Think chaise longues, huge arm chairs, and loads of velvet. Dark, rich colours work best to keep this trend modern and fabulous. If you’re not feeling brave, a few velvet scatter cushions are a great touch.

6. Jewel tones

Keeping to the luxury theme, and jewel tones are big news. Pantone named emerald it’s colour of 2013, meaning it will be everywhere in store. Go bold with a statement wall – perfect for the boudoir bedroom – or keep it simple with a few touches. Add in deep purples, blues, and reds in small details to really add to the luxurious feel.

7. Go graphic

If you’re brave enough, graphic prints are perfect for modern homes. Chevrons, floral prints, spots, and stripes are all perfect. Use a graphic wallpaper to make a statement, use pillows for a subtle nod, or incorporate them in any way you like. Feeling flashy? Go for clashing colours to give that ‘wow’ factor.

8. Futuristic

As we rely more and more on technology, interior design trends are beginning to follow suit. Televisions built into walls, clever iPhone docking stations, and surround sound are just some of the ways you can get technological in the home.

9. One of the boys

“The name’s Bond, James Bond.” Masculine touches are one of the hottest interior design trends this year. Think oversized furniture, chunky detailing and all things manly. It’s like bringing the bachelor pad up-to-date for the family man. We think this trend would work really well in the bedroom or a living room.

10. Outside in

Why not fill the gap left by your Christmas tree with some great house plants? Bringing the outside in is the final trend, and one that is super easy and affordable. A few plants here and there can really brighten up your home, and add a real modern feel. Enhance this with natural fabrics, and earthy tones in your furnishings and decor.

Which of these trends will you be trying this year?
