First, are you ready for it? Blogs take a lot of work and a lot of time. Blogs are serious business. Blogs take commitment and devotion because you aren’t going to have many people reading it at the beginning.
Second, do you have a plan? Because without a plan, a blog is just another page online that hardly anyone is going to read. Without a plan, blogs get pretty boring because readers get lost if they don’t know what the blog is really about.
That being said…
YES! Start a blog!
How Is Blogging Helpful for Freelance Writers?
I think that blogging is a great way for a new freelance writer to learn about the craft of writing for an online audience. Blogging is different than writing fiction or writing essays. Blogging is unique in that you can make it what you want it to be. But you have to know what you want it to be first!
Freelance writers can benefit from blogging in several ways:
- It helps them develop their writing skills. The best writers are the ones that write prolifically. The best writers are the ones that hone their craft by writing daily. Any type of blog can help you do this but if you have chosen a specialty for your freelance writing career, you can learn and practice at the same time.
- It helps them develop the practice. Writing every day is not easy. It does take discipline and devotion and effort. Treat your blog like a job – and you are the client. Investing in your blog with time and hard work will help your writing career in the long run.
- It gives freelance writers a place to direct clients for samples. That is if you take your blog seriously. Don’t write crap. Ever. Write quality content that demonstrates your skills.
What Will You Blog About?
Now that you’ve decided that you should definitely start a blog (you have, right?) you need to decide what your blog is about. One of the biggest mistakes that people make is starting a blog and then rambling on about nothing in particular for weeks, months, or even years. And then they wonder why people never come back. Umm – could it be because it is boring and doesn’t interest them?
A blog needs to have a direction – a plan of some sort. Sure, you know that your blog is supposed to help you get writing jobs but it isn’t going to do that if you’re talking about dog puke in your kitchen. Well, unless you can relate that to the main topic. Then you might have something.
This all goes back specializing as a freelance writer. What are you going to specialize in? Do you have a degree? That might be a good place to start. Or have you worked in a specific industry for many years and you have a lot of knowledge about that? Or do you have a passion that others would be interested in? Once you know your specialty, you should have a pretty good idea of what the focus of your blog should be.
